A flashing amber means the Mimio device is looking to connect to any USB hub—it recognizes that there is a hub available to communicate to. If using Windows, open MimioStudio and go to Tools > Settings > Classroom Devices. If using Mac, go to the Apple header and select Notebook > Preferences > Classroom Devices to make sure that MimioTeach or Vote is connected. If it is not connected (might show available), then highlight the MimioTeach and click Connect. If you are successful re-pairing the Mimio wireless components, the power/status LED on the Mimio devices should turn to solid green. This initiates the pairing process. A flashing green means that the USB hub is plugged in and recognizes the MimioTeach or Vote because it was connected to it before but mimiosys.exe has been terminated, and once MimioStudio is open you will get a solid green. If you continue to have issues, please reach out to Technical Support for additional troubleshooting.

The MimioTeach system has rare earth magnets built into the bar that will allow for attachment to any steel-backed whiteboard. We also provide metal mounting brackets that will attach to the magnets on the MimioTeach bar and then use 3M adhesive strips to attach to the whiteboard. There are four holes on the back of the MimioTeach bar, two at the top and two at the bottom. These could be used as screw holes to “permanently” attach the MimioTeach to a surface. Finally, there are optional security brackets available for purchase that will allow for a permanent mounting solution, removable with a supplied security screwdriver.

When the MimioTeach is running on battery power, the stylus will not charge. Please plug the Teach directly into the computer with the USB cable or use the provided USB adapter to plug into the wall and the stylus will charge. If the stylus still does not show a green LED, try rotating the stylus 360 degrees while in the holder to see if contact is being made with the charge pin. Also, try cleaning the contacts on the MimioTeach with a micro-fiber cloth to ensure that nothing is interfering with the charger contacts. If no green LED is shown while rotating the stylus, please contact Technical Support. We recommend charging the stylus overnight before using it for the first time and when not in use for maximum performance.

Official testing has shown that on a single charge, the MimioTeach stylus battery will last approximately 11 continuous hours. This means 11 straight hours of the tip being depressed. There are two things that will ensure the life of the battery is one of the longest on the market:

  1. The MimioTeach system has a built-in docking and recharging station for the stylus, so its “home” will always provide a recharge.
  2. Most use cases of the stylus show that it is used only 5% to 10% of class time. Therefore, the actual use time it would take for the battery to deplete entirely is close to 200 hours. Effectively, the stylus should never fully deplete—but if it does, simply charge it for five minutes to get up to 30 minutes of use. The stylus will fully charge in 3 hours. When the stylus needs charging, an amber LED will display. We recommend charging the stylus overnight before using it for the first time and when not in use for maximum performance.

The amber LED indicates that the MimioTeach stylus or the MimioCapture pens and eraser needs to be charged. We recommend charging the stylus overnight before using it for the first time and when not in use for maximum performance. Please note that when the MimioTeach is running on battery power, the stylus will not charge. Please plug the MimioTeach bar or the MimioCapture Tray directly into the computer with the USB cable or use the provided USB adapter to plug into the wall and the units will charge.

After a minute of the tip being depressed, there is an automatic shutoff, so the signal will stop being transmitted. Most use cases of the stylus show that it is used at very short intervals (in the length of seconds). Therefore, the actual use time it would take for the battery to deplete entirely is pushed to the hundreds of hours. Effectively, the stylus battery power should never fully deplete—but if it does, a five-minute charge will provide up to 30 minutes of use. The styli and eraser will recharge completely in their tray in about three hours.

Yes, you can order replacement pen tips. The stylus is made of solid Teflon with a replaceable tip to ensure ultra-smooth action on all board or screen surfaces.

  1. Connect a Mimio device to the computer (via cable or wireless connection).
  2. If applicable, turn the projector off.
  3. Open the Mimio Notebook application.
  4. Click File and select Connect. If prompted to disconnect from Interactive Mode, select Yes. Once completed, an image of the Mimio bar/board should appear on the blank Notebook page (usually on the left). A status message will also appear on the lower left section of the Mimio Notebook page identifying you that you are connected to a Mimio device. Remember to only use the STYLUS INK CAPTURE PENS with the EXPO dry-erase markers in Capture Mode. Use of the Mimio Mouse Interactive Stylus Pen will revert back to Interactive Mode.
  5. Make sure all sensors on the Mimio device have a clear line of sight to the writing surface and pens.
    1. The infrared sensor (IR) is the black semicircle protruding from the side of the bar.
    2. Two ultrasound sensors (US) are on the side of the Mimio device at the top and bottom of the bar. They are small silver circles.
    3. Make sure nothing is blocking these three sensors.
  6. Make sure the Mimio device is facing the proper direction. The Mimio bar should have the infrared and ultrasound sensors facing towards the surface (i.e. these sensors should point towards the large portion of the board have a clear line of sight of a Mimio stylus pen when in use).

Verify the device mounting style by clicking Tools and selecting Settings from the Mimio Notebook.

  1. The default mounting position is the vertical in the upper left corner of the writing surface.
  2. If the Mimio device is oriented in a different position, select the appropriate orientation from the Device Mounting pull-down option (for Xi only).

The MimioTeach system does not project an image—a separate projector is required to display the computer’s image onto the whiteboard. The MimioTeach system provides the technology to control the computer from the whiteboard. Any LCD or DLP projector will work. We recommend brightness between 1,500–2,500 lumens. (Minimum recommended resolution is XGA.)

AC power is only required for Mimio wireless if battery power is not preferred. When connected to a computer via USB cable, the device is powered by the computer through USB and does not require external power.

  • Mimio will not work with curved whiteboards or surfaces. While some functionality is possible in the first 5 to 15 inches, data capture will not be consistent. The Mimio technology requires a clear line of sight between the Mimio stylus pen and the Mimio device. A curved surface will create an obstacle, eliminating the clear line of sight between the two items.
  • Convex boards have more problems because they bulge outward; concave boards or bowl shaped surfaces may allow sound to travel normally. However, curved boards in general are not supported by Mimio.

The batteries have been tested to last for some 9 to 20 hours of continuous use, depending on the type of batteries used. Mimio recommends using either rechargeable batteries or lithium batteries. While lithium batteries are one-time use and expensive, they will give you the longest use time. However, rechargeable batteries will provide multiple uses and ample time to be used, for multiple days in a row. Remember, the MimioTeach system will go to a low power state after 30 minutes of inactivity.

  • Verify Mimio Notebook is in Capture Mode. When in Capture Mode, there will be a status message in the lower left corner of Mimio Notebook identifying that you are connected to a Mimio device. Additionally, when in Capture Mode, you will see an image of the Mimio device on the Notebook page as well.
  • Verify the Mimio system works with your stylus pens. If the Mimio works with the pens, but the eraser does not work, try replacing the battery (if using Xi). If a new AAA battery is installed and the eraser still does not work, contact Technical Support for a warranty service RMA.
  • When connected to the computer via USB or powered with AC power, the Mimio device will always stay on.
  • To power down the Mimio device, the AC adapter or USB cable must be unplugged from the Mimio device.

MimioTeach and Mimio Xi can go a maximum of 32′ (10 meters) with an unpowered or powered hub between the two cables. Lengths beyond that have not been tested, though using as many powered hubs as you want could provide a longer range (again, not approved by Mimio). If using the MimioCapture, the 16′ cable must be attached directly into the computer—unless you use one powered hub, then you can go up to 32′. The maximum length cable for the MimioView is 25′. The 10′ USB cable that comes with the MimioView plus a 15′ USB extension cable totals 25′ USB. 2.0 High Speed Extension: No power cable required.

The MimioTeach system can easily be set up by one person, with no installation required. You simply unpack the unit, install the software, mount the bar magnetically to the whiteboard to the left of the projected image, and connect via your desired connection. No mounting hardware, drilling, wiring, or technicians are required.
